Origin
The origin of Cal-Native Plants, LLC predates its founding in October 2000 by decades. When Frank J. Chavez started the business he had been seasoned with 25 years experience in almost every aspect of the industry. When Frank left a prestigious position from a prominent Southern California nursery to venture out on his own he had developed a deeply ingrained sense of the positive and negative effects that plant production has on our world.
One thing was obvious: plants are a wonderful necessity in our lives, but manufactured pesticides and fungicides are powerful toxins that can at times be hard to control, minimizing use of these toxins can be beneficial to our ecosystem.
Frank also realized that the lack of native plants threatens California’s natural landscape and the existence our native fauna. Commercial and residential customers are now embracing the benefits of native flora, appreciating their aesthetic value as well as greatly reducing water usage.
These elements propelled Frank to embark on a business enterprise that would focus on promoting both California “friendly” and native plant production without incorporating the ‘industry standard’ of applying pesticides or fungicides to any plant.

Ecologically Sound Practices
Cal-Native Plants, LLC is proud of having a pesticide and fungicide-free environment. We only employ organic growing methods and use AgroCoir®, a coconut by-product. AgroCoir®, a renewable, ecologically safe media, has a sponge-like structure that absorbs about eight times its weight in water while providing superior ventilation to plant roots. Significant advantages of using coir include its ability to virtually eliminate water run-off and that it requires less water than comparable media. http://www.agrocoir.com
